How Gosford Hospital’s Stroke Service Raised the Bar

Setting a new standard of care for patients and clinicians alike.

Recognised with a Highly Commended award by the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS) Quality Improvement Awards 2019—powered by SCRAWL software implementation.

Before Scrawl

Since 2007, national acute stroke unit care KPIs have seen little to no improvement—highlighting the urgent need for smarter solutions.

With Scrawl

Introduced at Gosford Hospital in 2018/19 by clinical request, SCRAWL quickly drove improvements in patient care, reduced length of stay, and boosted documentation, coding, and stroke classification accuracy.

(Note: This deployment was initially known as “Rounds by Trazepp Medical.”)

14.2% Reduction in Average Patient Stay

Cutting length of stay from 7.7 to 6.6 days saved 699 bed days—helping ease bed block and improve patient flow.

97% Stroke Unit Care Compliance

Significantly above the national baseline of 60–75%, setting a new benchmark for quality care.

$1.21 Million Saved in Productivity

Reduced patient stays over 9 months translated into significant cost savings and improved hospital efficiency.

Improvements to patient care

21% Increase in Stroke Unit Care

Boosted stroke unit care to 97%—well above the national benchmark of 68% and up from 76% in 2017.

15% Increase in Antihypertensive Use for Ischaemic Strokes

Reached 95%, surpassing the national benchmark of 76% and improving from 80% in 2017.

40% Increase in Anticoagulant Use for Atrial Fibrillation

Achieved 90%, well above the national average of 70%, and up from 50% in 2017.

Major Gains in Clinical Documentation

Post-deployment of SCRAWL, key clinical data points were documented far more consistently—demonstrating a clear boost in patient care quality.

Better Documentation Drives Accurate Coding & Funding

Under Australia’s Activity Based Funding, stroke cases are grouped into DRGs (B70 family), with B70A representing the most complex—and highest funded—cases.

Since SCRAWL’s deployment, Gosford Hospital has seen a shift toward more complex DRGs (B70A and B70B), reflecting improved documentation and ensuring fairer funding for patient care.
